Don’t wait for the witch hunt to begin. Perhaps an ex-spouse falsely accused you of sex crimes against your child in order to boost a custody case. Prosecutors and law enforcement take these types of claims very seriously. When faced with criminal charges that carry severe penalties like prison time, stiff fines, and registration on the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry, you need lawyers that know how to win these cases. The trial attorneys at Kronzek & Cronkright, PLLC, have roughly 100 years combined courtroom experience, much of it defending against allegations of child sexual abuse.

Investigating Child Sexual Abuse Allegations

It is important to remember that there is a list of mandated reporters of suspected abuse and neglect of minors, and a failure to report may result in civil and criminal liability. These include an array of professionals such as doctors, dentists, nurses, social workers, teachers, and more. A report to CPS for further investigation of possible sexual abuse could arise from any of these sources. Once an investigation begins, CPS is supposed to interview suspected child victims using the forensic interviewing protocol to ensure the accuracy and validity of the evidence obtained.

If the police or CPS suspect you of sexually abusing a child, the investigation could take several forms. CPS could initiate an investigation based on child abuse charges. The police could also begin an investigation for Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) in its various degrees. CSC encompasses a variety of acts, including rape, molestation, and any inappropriate contact. You could also be charged with Assault with Attempt to Commit CSC. This is a common charge, and is an offense that carries severe penalties, including registration on the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry, possible prison, and possible loss of parental rights.

Other related crimes include: enticing a minor to commit a sexual act, with or without the use of the internet; possession or distribution of child pornography; and indecent exposure.
